The Axe

Called to be useful and productive

“And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.”
Matthew 3:10 KJV

Opening thought

There are many tools that can be used to cut things down. A sword is good because of its blade and agility; however, for heavy and armored objects, it may not be the ideal tool. This is where the axe comes into play. An axe is heavy, and its head is so powerful that it can deliver a heavy, focused blow to any object.

The devotional message

Useful and Productive

Today's Scripture reminds us of the need to be useful and productive. No organization keeps unproductive people. Farmers are meticulous and very careful to monitor their plants. No unproductive plant is permitted to occupy space. They cut it down so that the productive plants can have room and get more nutrients to produce greater yields.

Abide in Him

Jesus Christ reminds us that the only way we can be useful and productive is to abide in Him. We receive our nourishment from His Spirit. From Him we draw the vitamins we need (insight, wisdom, and revelation) to be useful in our day-to-day activities. Without Him we can do nothing (John 15:5).

The axe is laid to the root of the tree. Are you productive? Are you useful?

Jesus Christ reminds us that the only way we can be useful and productive is to abide in Him.

Closing prayer

Lord Jesus, You are the true Vine, and I am a branch. Without You I can do nothing. Help me to abide in You every day and to draw my strength, insight, wisdom, and revelation from Your Spirit. Remove everything in my life that is unfruitful, and make me useful and productive in Your kingdom. In Jesus' name, amen.
